EXHIBITION – THE ARK – WE STAND BESIDE will be at The Barn, Banchory from March 26-April 19.
The Tree of Life, pictured above, is a pastel mural around five metres wide and still growing.
It features many creatures chosen by individuals who responded to the challenge to ‘stand beside’ a species in need of saving, recognizing the growing threat of biodiversity loss here in Scotland and across to world.
One of the first to sign up was naturalist, broadcaster and campaigner Chris Packham who singled out the rare Bog Sun Jumper Spider (Heliophanus dampfi) – a tiny two millimetre long spider found in a handful of muirs in Stirlingshire.
Renowned Scottish actor Brian Cox, already in the vanguard of the drive to make Scotland the first Rewilding Nation chose the wolf – hunted to extinction in the UK centuries ago, but now making a comeback across Europe.
And writer Max Porter (the film of his book Grief is a Thing with Feathers was recently on cinema release) dedicated short piece of writing on the decline of the ash tree – to go with a special wood engraving contributed by Scottish-born printmaker Hilary Paynter. Three more artists, Aberdeen based Ade Adesina, Banchory’s Fiona Hope and Ullapool’s seaweed star Julia Barton have also contributed a work.

Integral to the climate crisis is the challenge of halting the decline in biodiversity. To bring further awareness of the need to protect and restore so many species heading for extinction, I’m delighted to be part of a new growing campaign – I STAND BESIDE……..
My linked exhibition, The Ark – We Stand Beside, involved the contribution of around 170 people who chose a creature to adopt and ‘stand beside’. Around 800 people visited the exhibition during its short run at The Barn Arts in Banchory.

LATEST – No one can fail to be appalled at the huge death toll in Gaza with women and children the majority of those slaughtered – Our project #SEWTHEIRNAMES , in conjuction with Highland Palestine and Circus Art Space involved nearly 90 individuals who collectively sewed thousands of names of the dead onto a massive banner – now on show at the Palazzo Mora during the Venice Biennale until November 2024.
